Arts Commission Seeking Artists to Transform Storefronts with Installations

The San Francisco Arts Commission’s (SFAC) Community Arts & Education Program and the Mayor’s Office of Economic and Workforce Development have partnered to create a pilot Art in Storefronts program that places art temporarily in vacant storefront windows. Tough economic times have left many storefronts empty throughout the City, and this program encourages an alternative use of storefronts to reinvigorate and celebrate our neighborhoods, improve streetscape conditions, and support local merchants by increasing foot traffic.
Art in Storefronts will temporarily place original art installations by San Francisco artists in vacant storefront windows located on Taylor Street in the Tenderloin, Third Street in Bayview, Central Market Street, and Lower 24th Street in the Mission. The project launches in September and will run through January 2010.
This initiative is important to me for two reasons: first, it transforms vacant storefronts into attractive exhibition spaces and provides greater visibility to the creative community that calls San Francisco their home. Secondly, Art in Storefronts demonstrates the role that artists can play in promoting economic and community vibrancy.
Initiated by the San Francisco Arts Commission and the Office of Economic and Workforce Development (OEWD) the program will engage local artists in reinvigorating neighborhoods and commercial corridors that have been hard-hit by the economic downturn.
The deadline for artist applicants is August 14.
The application form and more information are available on the SFAC website.
